MARY ANN PAYNE
DEATH OF AN OCTOGENARIAN
Death has, during the last few days, removed an octogenarian who was amongst our oldest inhabitants. We refer to Mrs. M.A. Payne, who was born in 1833 and consequently had lived under the reign of four sovereigns.
She was the widow of Daniel Payne, who lived on Stroud Green ans was remarkable for his fondness for children, to whom he gave rides in his pony cart, and generally had a sweet in the comer of his waistcoat pocket for his little friends.
Daniel's later days were spent in one of those picturesque almshouses on the Enbome-road. When he passed away about ten years ago, his widow went to live on the Wash-road with her only child and daughter, Mrs. A. Collins, and here she passed away on Thursday morning last.
Deceased was buried in Newbury Cemetery in the same grave as her husband, and around the grave were gathered her daughter, son-in-law, three grandchildren and a few old and intimate friends.
The inscription on the coffin was
"Mary Ann Payne aged 82 years, died July8th, 1915."
Rev. C.V. Pike officiated, both deceased and her husband having been
connected with the Baptist Church for many years, prior to the erection of the present church, when the services were held in Northcroft-lane. Like her husband, she wished that no flowers should be placed on her grave.
Died 8 July 1915 aged 82.
Buried 12 July 1915 Bk 1899 p276 no. 9402
