MARY ANN POWERS
AGED ALMSWOMAN'S DEATH
An inmate of Raymond's Upper Almshouses, Mary Ann Powers, aged 88 died in the Hospital from the effects of an accident which befell her on May 31'. She was dozing in her chair, and thinking she heard the milkman at the door, started up suddenly. She stumbled and fell, breaking her hip. She was removed to the Hospital for treatment, where she died on Tuesday.
An inquest was held last (Wednesday) evening at St. John's Schoolroom by the Borough Coroner (Dr. W.H. Heywood) and a jury of whom Mr. William Henry Roberts was foreman. Evidence of identification was given by Mr. Arthur Attewell, also by Martha Leach, who repeated what deceased had told her about the accident.
Dr. Beadon Adams, who treated the case at the Hospital, said deceased was suffering from a weak heart and old age. Death was due to heart failure from pain and exhaustion due to the injuries.
The jury returned a verdict accordingly.
