WILLIAM HENRY DAY
RAILWAY MAN'S FUNERAL
The funeral of the late Mr. William Henry Day of Jubilee-road, took place on Thursday at the Cemetery. The deceased had been in the service of the Great Western Railway Company for 25 years, six as foreman at Abingdon, nine as foreman at Newbury, and latterly as ticket collector. He was much respected by his fellow workmen, as was shown by their desire to pay the last tribute at the funeral.
Mr. G.K. North (stationmaster) and Inspector Gawthorne, with thirty railway employees, attended. The coffin was borne by four colleagues of the deceased, Messrs. J. Ferry, W. Hillier, W. Gray and W. Willis.
The service was conducted by the Rev. T. Clarke Edwards (Wesleyan superintendent minister), and the Rev. R. Wickham Legg (Vicar of St. John's) was present at the graveside, as well as the Rev. F.W. Clarke representing the P.S.A.
The mourners were Mrs. Day (widow), Mr. W.R. Day (son), Miss Ivy Day (daughter), Mrs. P. Norton (sister), Miss A. Day (sister), Mr. P. Day and Mr. J. Day (uncles), Mrs. and Miss Wells (friends).
Among the large number of wreaths were the following: Mother, Ivy, Will, and Granny; Lily and Annie, Aunt Lizzie(,) Station-master and fellow workers, Mr. and Mrs. Wells and family, Mr. and Mrs. W.H. Coldicutt, Mr. and Mrs. Lipscombe, Mr. and Mrs. Middleton, Mr. and Mrs. Barrett, Wesley Guild Sunshine Band, Mr. and Mrs. Midwinter (Waltair(?)), Mr. and Mrs. Spanswick, Miss A. Boddington, Mrs. Luke and family, Bess and George, Mr. and Mrs. Prince and family, Mr. and Mrs. Chivers and family, Mrs. and Miss Hall.
The deceased was 43 years of age, and had suffered much latterly from gastritis.
