infants sudden death. Inquiry was held at the police court by the borough coroner Dr Hayward on Friday evening into the death of Edward Charles, infant child, of Mr Willoughby of northcroft lane.
Evidence was given by the mother, Mrs Elizabeth Willoughby, who said the baby was ten weeks old. It had a cold but was better. On Wednesday it appeared very drowsy and in the evening she took it to a herbalist who gave her some powders one of which was administered. Shortly before 10:00 PM the child became much worse and died shortly afterwards.
A neighbour Mrs Elizabeth Davis said the child appeared quite healthy and was well on Tuesday. She was called on Wednesday evening and was with the child when it died. Doctor Hickman said he had tended the child and 11:00 PM on Wednesday night; it was dead. He made the post mortem examination. The body was plump well nourished. There was a good deal of bronchitis in the lungs and this was the cause of the death. The jury of which Mr H Oliver was foreman returned a verdict from natural causes. |
