WILLIAM STANLEY KNIGHT
DEATH OF MR. STANLEY KNIGHT
To the great regret of a large circle of friends the death took place on Sunday of Mr. William Stanley Knight at the residence of his mother, Mrs. G.M. Knight, Donnington-square.
The deceased was a member of an old Newbury family, being the son of the late Mr. George Mitchell Knight, who was Mayor of the borough in 1883. He was an auctioneer and surveyor by profession, and for several years carried on a business as such in Newbury. He took a practical interest in several local institutions, being more particularly identified with the Gordon Boys’ Brigade, of which he was honorary secretary. His health failing, his doctor advised residence in South Africa, where he and his wife, a daughter of Mr and Mrs Mees, have lately been residing at Boksburg, in the Transvaal. In the Spring of this year they came back on a visit to the old home, with the full intention of returning; indeed arrangements had been made to start on Saturday last. However, the disease from which Mr. Knight was suffering, developed rapidly and death took place on Sunday, a few hours after it was expected he would have been on the high seas returning to South Africa. Sincere sympathy is felt for the young widow as well as the mother and other relatives. Two other members of the family, Messrs Sydney and Edgar Knight, are living in South Africa.
The funeral took place on Tuesday in the family vault at Newbury Cemetery. The service was conducted by the Rector of Newbury (Rev. Lionel Majendie) and the Rev. Mr Buss, rector of Boksburg, South Africa. The latter had become personally acquainted Mr. Knight, and attended the funeral to show his regard for him, giving a sympathetic address in the chapel, testifying to the high character of the deceased, and expressing his sincere sympathy with the bereaved relatives.
The mourners were Mrs. W.S. Knight (widow), Mrs. G.M. Knight (mother), Mrs W.E. Hall (sister), Mr. George Hall (nephew),Mr. R. Mees, Mr.. R, Mees junior, Mr. Fred Masters, Rev. Mr. Buss, Mr. and Mrs..Stephen Knight, Mr.T. Knight (Reading), Nurse Strong, Mr. and Mrs. Harrold. etc.
The coffin of plain oak with brass furniture, bore a plate inscribed
