JAMES BURN
DEATH OF MR. JAMES BURN
AN OLD NEWBURY TRADER
The death took place on Saturday at his residence, “Heather Brae,” Andover-road, of Mr. James Burn, who 40 years ago set up in business as a jeweller and watch maker in Bartholomew-street.
Mr. Burn came of Devonshire stock. He left Tavistock 53 years ago to come to Newbury in the employ of Mr. Alfred Stradling of Northbrook-street. Thirteen years later he started in business for himself, carrying on until 1911, when he handed on to his eldest son, Mr. F.J. Burn. A man of the strictest integrity, Mr. Burn was highly respected as a trader. During the whole time he was in business he never made a single purchase unless he had the money ready to pay for it on the spot. Since his retirement his chief hobbies have been gardening and walking. He was never so happy as when he was setting out for a long tramp on a brisk morning, and during the last 15 years he has frequently walked to Abingdon, Oxford, Reading and Andover. He leaves a widow and three sons to mourn their loss. His age was 75.
The Funeral
The funeral took place yesterday (Wednesday) at the Newtown-road Cemetery, the Rev. A.H. Fowler, Congregational Minister, officiating. The family mourners were: Mr. F. J, Burn, Newbury, Mr. L.V. Burn, Devizes, and Mr. A.T. Burn, Market Harborough (sons), and Mr. L. Croxford, Newbury, (nephew.) etc.
