THE LATE MR. JOHN WILSON
The death took place on Wednesday night of Mr. John Wilson, of Primrose Villa, Wash Common, who was one of the most genuine sportsmen in the district. He was a native of Greatbar, near Birmingham, and was head gamekeeper to Mr. Philip Wroughton for fourteen years: subsequently he filled a similar post on the Benham Estate for thirteen years. He retired from active life some eight years ago, and took up his residence at Wash Common. His favourite recreation was cricket, and few accorded the game more enthusiastic support. Wherever a cricket match was in progress there was John Wilson to be found. There was no more regular spectator on the Newbury ground than John Wilson, and he was captain of the Stockcross Cricket Club for some years. Even in his retirement he did not relax his zeal, and captained the Wash Common Club with more energy than is to be found in many younger men. The funeral took place on Monday, at Newbury Cemetery, the Vicar of St. John’s officiating. The mourners were Mrs. Wilson (widow), Mr. J. Wilson (nephew), Mr. and Mrs. Bowen (brother-in-law and sister), Mr. James Bowen, Mr. John Bowen (nephews), and Mrs. Wheeler. “There then follows a list of the many old friends who attended the funeral”. Wreaths were sent by “His loving wife”, Mr. and Mrs. And Misses Wroughton, Ted and Maud, James and John Bowen, Mr. and Mrs. Cox, John Wilson, Walter Bentley, the Talkland Cricket Club etc. The funeral arrangements were carried out by Messrs. Adey & Co., of Newbury.
