James was born in Aldbourne, the son of a Sawyer and began life as a Sawyer and chairmaker and later moved to Newbury to become an Innkeeper at the New Market Inn, 21 Cheap St. Kate Atherton Langfield was born in Ramsbury to Mary Ann Langfield before her marriage to George Atherton, Master Brewer of Ramsbury. She was a servant to a shoemaker in Ramsbury before her marriage to James. Her sister & brother-in-law, Emily & Edmund New, innkeepers of Two Brewers, West Mills, are buried nearby in ChNW35. When James died his brother Tom Dew, Licensed Victualler, and Edmund New were executors to his Will in which he left c£1000. Sources: Ancestry records.
