Greenham

fire

on Tuesday afternoon a fire broke out at bury's bank Greenham common and consumed 2 cottages belonging to Mr George Parr and in the occupation of William Wickens and Robert Wolf. The flames appeared to originate in the House of the latter the chimney taking fire and emitting a spark upon the thatched roof. Everything being dry and a brisk wind blowing at the time the fire spread rapidly but the inmates of the cottages were able to remove all their furniture with the exception of a bedstead. A block of cottages stood about 10 feet distance but the fire was fortunately prevented from extending. The cottages are insured. Newbury engine and brigade reached the scene of the fire before the whole was destroyed but as very little water was to be obtained the services so willingly rendered were comparatively inoperative. We understand that an elderly and bedridden man was with some difficulty removed from wolfs house
