ALEXANDER ALFRED HAMMOND

FUNERAL OF A BUFFALO

A young fellow named Alex Hammond, a sign-writer, and a member of the Buffaloes Lodges, died suddenly on Thursday, after lying unconscious from the time he was siezed. He had been removed from his lodging in Berkeley Road to the District Hospital, where he died. His father was telegraphed for by Mr. Frank Andrews on the Saturday after he [was] taken ill and arrived from Hertfordshire at night, remaining with him to the end. On Saturday afternoon last the mortal remains were interred in the cemetery, in the presence of a large concourse of friends.

The mourners were Mr. Hammond (father), Mr. Hammond, jun (brother), Mrs. Frank Andrews, Mr. Frank Andrews. the "White Hart" and the "Bear" Lodges were represented by the following Bros., viz: "Sir"  Geo Tyer, Primo H.J. Lucas, Primo Douglas, Primo C. Burningham, Bros. Revd. Scott, Bass Dick Palmer, and Mrs. Medlock, representing Bro. Medlock.

Among other friends around the grave were Messrs. Robinson, Tancock, Frank Dore, H. Mundy, A. Laidler, J. Harrison, Mrs. and Miss Harrison, Mrs. Shilton and Miss F. Shilton. His two friends Messrs Claude Bailey and H.J. Butler acted as bearers.

Buried 7 April 1900 Bk 1899 p. 013 no. 7301

Aged 25

Footnote:

The text refers to his father arriving from Hertfordshire, and doesn't identify any of the members of the Newbury Hammonds attending the funeral.

It is, therefore, suggested that this was Alexander Hammond listed in the 1881 census as living with his father William, his mother Catherine, and siblings Fanny (15), Rosa (12), and Sidney (1) in Hemel Hempstead.

The 1891 shows him (albeit wrongly transcribed as “Alexandra”!) living with his aunt and uncle, Mary and David, in Bengeo, Hertfordshire.
