Herbert Smith is not buried in Newtown Road Cemetery. However a war memorial was erected by family members so that they could honour the memory of their loved one who was killed overseas in the service of their country.

IBLMO our dear mother Susan SMITH who passed away July 12th. 1911 aged 63./
Also of our dear father George Henry SMITH died August the 24th. 1918 aged 66./ "Until the daybreak."/
Also L.G. RANSFORD/ aged 81 years./ And V.A. RANSFORD/ aged 86 yrs.
In Cherished memory/ and a token of love to/ our dear one/ Herbert SMITH 2/5 North Fus. & 13th B.L.I./ who died of wounds received in Action Sept. 21 1917 aged 39./ He was interred in Bedford House Cemetery, Lillebeke/ one mile south of Ypres./ From his sorrowing wife and children./ "He fought the good fight and died that we might live." |
