ELLEN FONE
DEATH AT THE WORKHOUSE —On Wednesday an inquest was held at the Newbury Union, before Dr. Watson, J. P., borough coroner, on the body of a woman named Ellen Fone, formerly living at the lodging house, Northcroft Lane, with a man named Appleton, a navvy. The woman had been of intemperate habits, and was only conveyed to the Union from her lodgings a few hours before her death. The jury having viewed the body, after hearing the evidence returned a verdict of death from natural causes.
Strangely the death of Ellen Fone is not recorded in the Newbury Union Workhouse death records. There is, however, the death of an Elizabeth Riddick, aged 41, recorded 8th of January 1884, from Newbury. buried in Newbury Cemetery. No Elizabeth Riddick is recorded in free BMD!?
