  Headstone: IHS / In Affectionate Remembrance of / Alice Lane / who died April 13th 1868 / aged 35 years. / "A pale consumption gave the fatal blow / The stroke was certain, tho / the effect was slow, / With lingering pain Heaven saw me oppressed / pity'd my sighs and kindly gave me rest." / Also of Elizabeth Matthews / mother of the above ..(eroded).. //

    Alice was a dressmaker. Her mother, Elizabeth nee Wills was born in Banbury, Oxon, to Thomas Wills, carpenter, & married Alice's father William Lane. After he died prior to the 1841 census, she married Henry J.L. Matthews in St Botolph, Aldgate & came with her 6 children to Newbury. They lived in Bartholomew St where Henry was a Master Hairdresser, assisted by members of the family. Source: ancestry records.
