MARK WINTERBOURNE
THE INQUEST ON MARK WINTERBOURNE
The Inquest on Mark Winterbourne was held on Thursday morning at the Magistrates Room, before Dr. Watson, J.P. and a jury of whom Mr. Alexander Burns was foreman.
The following evidence was given:-Mrs Elizabeth Beauchamp said "I am the landlady of the "Cricketers' Arms." The deceased lodged at the house. The deceased had no employment and subsisted principally on charity. I saw him last at three o'clock yesterday afternoon. He was in the tap room. He said that he was poorly, and I made him a drop of warm gin and water. He drank it. In two or three minutes I saw a man named Hicks taking him out. I asked him where he was going to take him to. He replied "Up the yard." The man returned shortly and said to me that he thought deceased was gone, meaning that he was dead. I went up the yard where deceased was lying. I thought he was dead. I remained with him until assistance came. I sent for a doctor, and Mr. Birch came. He pronounced him dead. The deceased has lodged with me two or three years. On Friday last he complained of illness and went to bed early. His breathing at times was very bad and he had a bad cough. I considered him to be a fairly steady man.

Charles Hicks, labourer, gave corroborative evidence. The deceased spoke to him of going into the Union. A verdict of "Death from natural causes" was returned.
