THOMAS STROUD
DEATH OF VENERABLE ALMSMAN
Death has removed an old inhabitant in Thomas Stroud, who succumbed at the advanced age of 94. He had been an inmate of St Batholomew's Almshouses for the last twenty years and died there.
He was a native of Vernham, but came to Newbury as a young man to act as carter to the firm of seedsmen, the Shaws, of Westfields. Here he met his wife, who was also employed as cook in the house. He afterwards was employed by Mr. J. Adey, coal merchant, but also did hauling on his own account. He was a stirling type of workman.

Mrs. Stroud was at one time a saleswoman for the "Newbury Weekly News" in the early days of the paper, starting in the early hours of Thursday morning on her round, finishing in the Market Place and disposing of over three hundred papers in the day.
