Hinds was the successful candidate and he subsequently took up his duties as Sergeant on 21 October, 1857. Hinds was aged 25 years, a married man with two children. Until the time of his appointment he had been a serving officer, Pc1 12 in the newly formed Berkshire County Constabulary and a Constable in the Metropolitan Police before that. He had earlier been employed on the railway."

4. Pages 59/60: " ... problems arose when Sergeant Hinds, who was called as a witness to prove the case, admitted during cross-examination to taking part in after-hours drinking at the premises on the night in question, and remaining there well into the early hours." ... "The unfortunate sergeant appears to have submitted his resignation immediately after the court hearing." And so on.
