HARRIET HEATH
Reading Mercury - Saturday 01 September 1855
In the 1861 census Ralph Heath (64) a “Baker” was living with his wife Harriet (57) at Pound Street (off Bartholomew Terrace), and four children; Harriet H (21) an “Assistant in Shop” and Albert R (20) a “Boot Closer Journeyman”, Alexander Geo (17) an “Apprentice Boot Closer”, and Frederick A (15).
On 10th April 1862 Ralph Heath died (aged 65) at Pound Street, Newbury. He was described as a “Baker Master” and his cause of death was recorded as “hydrothorax” (fluid accumulated in the pleural cavity often associated with cirrhosis and liver failure). In the 1871 census Harriet Heath (69) a “Widow” and “Shoe Binder” was living at Bartholomew Terrace with two of her children Albert R (30) a “Postman”, and Frederick A (24) a “Boot and Shoemaker”.
Harriet Heath died (aged 72) on 1st December 1875 at Pound Street Newbury. She was described as the “Widow of Ralph Heath a Baker”. Her cause of death was recorded as “Albuminuria 3 months” (Albumin in the urine often caused by kidney problems or diabetes). Her death was registered by Frederick Heath (her son) who was present at her death and lived at Pound Street, Newbury.
The burial records show that Harriet Heath was buried on 4th December 1875 at Newtown Cemetery, Newbury after a service at Newbury St John the Evangelist. She was recorded as aged 72 and from Newbury.
