HARRY ANDREWS
Pc Andrews, who had only recently been appointed to the Borough Force, was seriously assaulted on 24 July 1874 whilst in the process of escorting a prisoner, whom he had just arrested, to the Police Station. Pcs Andrews and Summersby had been sent to the Three Tuns Public House in the town centre following a complaint regarding the offender’s conduct. On the officers’ arrival at the pub they found the offender, a local by the name of James Bradfield, intoxicated and using abusive and threatening language. He was arrested and whilst enroute to the police station viciously kicked Pc Andres in the groin and tried to bite him. The officer never fully recovered from this assault And was never again fit to perform Police duties. When one considers that Pc Andrews was still only in his early twenties, this injury was obviously a serious handicap to him for the rest of his life. The offender was subsequently sentenced to four months imprisonment with hard labour, which seems light for the injuries he inflicted. |
