STEPHEN JUSTICE

Mr. Westcombe: Didn’t Justice apply?  He has been in the force and nothing is known against him.  If we can appoint one of our men, I think it is desirable as affording the stimulus of reward to men who do their duty.

The Mayor: Justice is disqualified by age; and having got into sad reproach by having altered the terms of an advertisement in a former case.  I don’t think I can take upon myself such a responsibility just at present.

STEPHEN JUSTICE

Pc Justice appears to have been an army veteran and, although it is not clearly documented, it seems that he sustained wounds prior to joining the Police.

The council awarded him a pension of 10/6d per week, but he died the following year (1874) aged 53, so did not enjoy it for long.
