THOMAS COCKAYNE The death of Mr. Thomas Cockayne, the well known and much respected stud groom at Sandleford Priory, a thorough specimen of bold, judicious and in every way accomplished horseman has passed from us. Mr Cockayne died at his residence at East Fields, Newbury, the instant, at the good old age of eighty-nine, and his remains were buried at the Newbury Cemetery on Saturday last. His late employer Wm. Chateris, Esq., the owner of Sandleford, with whom the deceased had lived for thirty-three years, showing the last mark of respect to his faithful old servant by following his servant to the grave.
The upper servants at Sandleford Priory attended the funeral; most of them had been fellow servants of the deceased for upwards of twenty years. The liberal wages allowed Mr. Cockayne, had enabled him to secure a competency for his old age, but Mr. Charteris continued to pay him up to the time of his death, although he had for a long time been unable to follow his employment.
