ROBERT DANIEL HALL

“The Late Mr Robert Hall - A craftsman of the old school.

By the death of Robert Daniel Hall, which occurred at a nursing home in Reading on 11 August, Newbury has lost a hard-working craftsman of the old school.  Apprenticed to the firm of Joseph Hopson and Sons some 54 years ago , Robert Hall was taught the trade of carpenter and joiner under the guidance of his father, who also worked for the late Mr Joseph Hopson for many years.  There was no job relating to joinery or cabinet making at which he was not an adept, and however large or however small and however intricate, he was never at a loss to carry out the work . There must be very few houses in the Newbury district in which Robert Hall had not worked, and he was well-known as a workman who took any amount of trouble to satisfy a customer, and many an amateur carpenter has sought his advice on all kinds of work.

During the last war he acted as a Special Constable, until he was drafted away on work on an aeroplane factory  where he was employed in making parts for many months.

He was a member of the Victory Lodge of Free Masons  and he showed considerable interest in Masonic matters. Mr Hall was 68 years of age , and lived in Blenheim-road, Newbury . He was a widower, and leaves two daughters.

The funeral took place on Thursday, a service at Newbury Parish Church being conducted by the Rev AAH Radice . The interment was in Newtown-road Cemetery . Members of the family and many old friends attended , including the directors of Messrs Camp Hopson and Co Ltd.”
