ALMS WOMAN'S DEATH Gas Ring Accidentally Left On A verdict that she died from coal gas poisoning when a gas ring was accidentally left on, was recorded at an inquest at Newbury on Friday afternoon, on Miss Annie Franklin, aged 72, of 1 St Mary's Almshouses, Cheap-street.
Evidence was given that Miss Franklin had been attended by Dr. Finn for some time and recently had a stroke. It was her habit to make her morning cup of tea on a gas ring in her bedroom. About 9.30 on Thursday morning, Mrs. Pocock, her charwoman, went to the house and smelt gas. She called upstairs, and getting no answer, went for Miss Franklin's niece, Mrs. Margaret Denham, of 40 Howard road, Mrs Denham went to the house and found her aunt dead in bed. She turned off the gas and went for Dr. Finn, who certified that death was due to coal gas poisoning.
The Coroner, Mr. S.V. Pinniger, said there was no suggestion of suicide, and recorded a verdict as stated.
