THE LAST OF THE CHAIRMAKERS The death took place on May 29th of Mr. Henry Copas, an inmate of Raymond's Almshouses, in his eightieth year. He was one of the last of the Newbury chairmakers, and carried on business in the Wharf for many years. This was at a time when chairmaking was quite a considerable local industry. For a period of nearly twenty years he was a Sunday School teacher at St. Nicholas, and on his retirement he was presented with a handsome timepiece, suitably inscribed from the clergy and fellow teachers.
The funeral took place on June 2nd, the Rev. A.W.H. Theodosins officiating at the service in St John's Church and at the interment in Newtown-road Cemetery.
The mourners were Mr. and Mrs. H. Copas (son and daughter-in-law), Mr. and Mrs. Reg Legg (son-in-law and daughter), Miss R. Copas, his grandchildren Girlie, Ronnie, Doris and Roy. Harry and Willie, Mrs. R. Legg, Hilda and Mr. Seward, Mr. and Mrs. Swain. |
