FREDERICK JOHN COLDICUTT
THE LATE MR. F.J. COLDICUTT, J. P.
The death of Mr. Frederick John Coldicutt took place on Monday, the 15th inst., at his residence, “Welldale,” at the age of 73. He was the son of the late Mr. W. Coldicutt, of Caversham, Reading. He came to Newbury in 1860, having purchased the old-established purveying business on the Bridge, from the late Mr. Edward Farrow. Here he continued to trade for about a quarter of a century, when he retired to Porchester Villas , and subsequently to his present home at “Welldale.”
Throughout his life he took a quiet but nevertheless a keen interest in all that pertained to the town and its welfare, and contributed generously to local necessities and needs. He was a strenuous adherent of the Conservative cause in politics, and the Church found in him a consistent member.
He held the position of Guardian of the Poor for a lengthened period, but he eventually resigned that position. He was Proctor of St. Marys’s Charity, and Trustee of other charities. Formerly he was a Governor of the Newbury Grammar School. He was one of the original promoters of the Newbury Water Works Company and was a member of the directorate. In 1897 he was appointed a Justice of the Peace for the Borough, at the same time as Alderman A. Jackson and the late Councillor H.S. Hanington. In the early days of such official life he was always a reliable attendant upon the duties which devolved upon him, but for sme years now his health has been so continuously precarious as to incapacitate him entirely from all public tasks.
His wife predeceased him in 1903. He leaves two children, Mr. W.H. Coldicutt and Mrs. Walter Cooke, to mourn their loss.

The funeral took place on Friday afternoon, the first part of the service being held at St. John’s Church (Rev. A. J. P. Baines) officiating. The mourners were Mr. W.H. Coldicutt and Mrs. Cooke (son and daughter), Mrs. D. Finn (niece), Mrs. W.H. Coldicutt (daughter-in-law), Mr. W. Cooke, Mr. N. Coldicutt (nephew), Mr. D. Finn, Mr. E. Continued
Mr. Coldicutt was appointed a magistrate for the borough on September 10th, 1897. On Friday morning at the sitting of the Court the Mayor, (Mr. Adrian Hawker) said they had heard with great sorrow of the death of one of their colleagues, Mr. F.J. Coldicutt, who had been a magistrate for just twenty years. For some time past they had missed his genial presence with them on the Bench, but during the time that health permitted he was regular in his attendance and most conscientious in the discharge of his duties. They desired the Clerk to forward an expression of sympathy with the family, and their high appreciation of his services. Mr. Pettier promised to carry out the wishes of the Bench.
