Death of a soldiers wife. After a long and painful illness the young wife of Private T Cook passed away on May 21 at her mother's, 7, fountain cottages, Derby Road. The funeral took place on Saturday the burial service being held in St John's Church conducted by the vicar reverend A G P Baines. The mourners besides husband, mother, brothers and sisters included a number of other relations while in the church were neighbours and friends; also others around the graveside.
Deceased was placed in the grave with her father in the cemetery in Newtown Road the coffin being of polished elm with brass fittings with the inscription.
"Gertrude Ellen Cook born August 3 1894 died may 21 1917 age 23 years".
The coffin was covered with wreaths and flowers and among those sending these floral tributes where her husband "with fondest love and affectionate remembrance".
