GREENHAM ROAD FATALITY

WOMAN DIES:POLICE HUNT CAR

Newbury police are endeavouring to trace the driver of a car which, it is alleged, went on after knocking down an elderly woman near the Adam and Eve public house, Greenham-road, on Thursday night.

The woman, Mrs Ellen Phillips, aged 85, of 42, York-road, Newbury, sustained a fractured skull and died less than two hours after being admitted to Newbury District Hospital.

Mrs Phillips, the widow of an Australian mining engineer who died in 1912, lived with her son, Mr. Frederick George Phillips, a draughtsman. On Thursday evening, Mr. Phillips visited a sick neighbour, leaving his mother alone in the house. When he returned at 8.30pm he found that she had gone out.

“At times she was rather forgetful. She must have forgotten I was only next door and gone out to look for me.” Mr Phillips told a reporter.

“I became alarmed, as she had not been out for some times and it was a dark, wet night. I went out to look for her, and then heard there had been an accident and an old lady had been injured. I enquired at the hospital and found that it was my mother.”

The inquest was opened by the borough Coroner, Mr. S.V. Pinniger, and adjourned to December 7th to enable the police to continue their enquiries.
