The Late Mrs. W. Edmonds

Widow of a Well-known Newbury Tradesman

 

The death took place on Jan. 29th at the age of 90, of Mrs. Ann Mary Edmonds, 110 Craven-road, Newbury.  Mrs. Edmonds was the widow of the late Mr. William Edmonds, who was Mayor in 1898-9.  Mr. Edmonds was the grandson of the founder of the old-established business of Messrs. Edmonds and Son, cabinet makers and upholsterers in Northbrook-street.  He was in business practically all his life and was assisted by his wife for many years.  He died in 1925.

 

Mrs. Edmonds was a regular worshipper at St. Nicholas Church.  She came to Newbury from Cirencester upon her marriage in 1878.

 

The Funeral

 

The funeral took place at the parish Church on Tuesday, the Rector (Rev. Bertram Russell) officiating.  The interment was in the Newtown-road Cemetery.

 

The mourners were: The misses Margaret, Alice and May Edmonds (daughters), Mrs. And Mr. Stephens (daughter and son-in-law), the Misses Dorothy and Mary Stephens (grandchildren), Mr. A. Edmonds, Winchester (cousin), Mr. A. and the Misses E. and B. Edmonds (nephews and nieces).  Among those unable to be present were Mrs. Needham (daughter), now in Rhodesia; Mr. D. Stephens, on service in India; Mr. Lock (brother) was ill, and represented by his son, Mr. George Lock.  Others present included Miss Fielder, Miss Nisbett, Mrs. B. Russell, Miss L.E. Pearce, Mrs. Lovelock, Mrs. M.B. Howell.

 

Wreaths were sent from: Her children; her grandchildren; brother William and family; nephews and nieces, 114 Craven-road; nephews and nieces, Speen; Mr. A. Edmonds and Staff of Edmonds and Son; the Misses and Mr. Fielder; Admiral and Mrs. Hyde-Parker; Mrs. Lovelock.

 

The funeral arrangements were carried out by Messrs. Edmonds and Son, in conjunction with Messrs. Hitchman Ltd.

 

Also : Mrs Edmonds (nee Lock) married on 30th April 1878 and they had 5 children: William, b. 1879; Margaret A, b. 1881; Alice Mary, b. 1880; Winifred J, b. 1886 and Helen, b. 1883.  In her will she left effects to the value of £241. 4s 8d.  Mr Edmonds died on 22nd December 1925 aged 75 years.
