ARTHUR SEWARD

DEATH OF MR. ARTHUR SEWARD

KEEN METHODIST WORKER

We regret to announce the death of Mr. Arthur Seward, which occurred suddenly at his residence, Guywood, London-road, Newbury, on Monday morning. Mr. Seward, who was aged 59 had suffered with his heart for some months.

Eldest son of the late Mr. Samuel Seward, who died last January. Mr. Seward was born at Hyde End Mill, Brimpton, and worked for his father in the baker’s and confectionery business in the Market-place until some 15 years ago he set up in business on his own in the Broadway. He retired about 12 years ago since when his chief hobby has been gardening.

Like his father, Mr. Seward was a zealous member of the Methodist Church, and threw his energy into all efforts connected with the       Bartholomew-street place of worship. He was society steward and trust treasurer for a long time.

In his early days, Mr. Seward served in the Berks Yeomanry, while for many years right to the time of his death he was a Special Constable. He leaves a widow, one son and one daughter.

ARTHUR SEWARD

THE FUNERAL

Many friends were present at the funeral service, which took place yesterday, (Wednesday) at the Methodist Church, Bartholomew-street. It was conducted by the Rev. A. Russell Potts, assisted by the Rev. O. Kirkby Evans, who read the lesson. In a tribute to the deceased’s life, Mr. Potts said Mr. Arthur Seward won for himself the esteem of his church with which he had been associated practically all his life. He was a loyal and devoted member, and as a trustee shared in the responsibilities of the church. For the last ten years he served most generously as treasurer, which office he only relinquished a few months ago because of failing health. “We can ill spare such a man as Mr. Seward, and we shall miss him much from our fellowship here,” said Mr. Potts, and he concluded with a deep expression of sympathy with Mrs. Seward and family.

Long list of hymns sung follows.

Family mourners were Mrs Seward (widow), Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Seward (son and daughter-in-law), Miss Cissie Seward (daughter), Mr. and Mrs E.P. Davis (brother-in-law and sister),Mr. And Mrs F. Seward (brother and sister-in-law), Mr and Mrs A.O. Moore (brother-in-law and sister), Mr. and Mrs Woodward, Mr. and Mrs. Layley, Mr. J. Woodward, Miss E. Woodward, Mr. and Mrs. W.
