BABY OVERLAID.—On, Monday the death of a baby took place which necessitated an inquest, owing to the fact that it had been accidentally suffocated., The baby boy in question was the son of Mr. Joseph Brindley and Mrs. Brindley, of Derby-road and was born on Saturday morning. A doctor was not in attendance, but the midwife, Mrs. Hunt, said the, baby was perfectly healthy. On Sunday night the child cried considerably, and continued until the morning. The father went downstairs, but about teno'clock ,his wife called him as the baby was very quiet, but apparently alive. He called his sister, Mrs. Charlotte |Kent and a neighbour Mrs. Alice Woodley, who told him the baby was dead.   Mr Hickman was sent for and pronounced life to be extinct.  The coroner  Dr. Heywood, ordered an inquest, which took place on Tuesday night at the police court, Mr Cambridge being foreman of the jury. Evidence was given, by Mr.  Joseph Brindley, Mrs. Charlotte Kent, Mrs. Alice Woodley, |Mrs.. Hunt, and Dr. Hickman.  \the last witness said he made a post mortem examination, and believed the child died  from suffocation. He thought that the mother had  accidentally overlaid it.  The child had been properly attended to by the midwife, and by all who had looked after it, there were no marks of violence.

The Jury returned a verdict that the child was accidentally overlaid by the mother.
