Sudden Death of Mrs. John Mason. – We regret to announce the death of Mrs. john Mason, of The Market-place, which occurred on Thursday evening. Mrs. Mason, who was about 50 years of age, and a daughter of the late Mr. E.P. Plenty, of Burghclere, was of a somewhat delicate constitution, but was as well as usual up to Wednesday evening, when she enjoyed some boating with her husband on the Old River. On Thursday, however, she became unwell, and medical aid was procured. Mrs. Mason has suffered from a weak heart for some time past, and to the deep grief of her devoted husband and children, she expired about eight o’clock in the evening. The deceased lady was quite sensible, and cheerful, during the day, but the heart action collapsed, and the end came with painful suddenness. The intelligence of her death caused sincere sorrow in the town, and there were general expressions of sympathy with the bereaved relatives. |

ALICE EMILY MASON
THE LATE MRS. JOHN MASON
It is with deep regret that we record the death of Mrs. John Mason, which occurred somewhat suddenly at her residence the Market-place on the evening of Thursday last. Only on the previous day Mrs. Mason was about in her usual health. In the evening she was induced by her son to accompany him for a row on the Kennet and Avon Canal. On returning she complained of feeling very chilly, and retired somewhat earlier to rest than her accustomed time. The next morning she remained in bed, and continued somewhat indisposed; later on she appeared worse, and Dr. Jenner Clarke was at once sent for, but notwithstanding the prompt measures employed she passed away about a quarter-to-eight, death arising from failure of the heart's action.
Mrs. Mason was the third daughter of Mr. Edward Pellew Plenty of Burghclere, and she was married to Mr John Mason,—who with a son and two daughters mourn an irreparable loss,—on the 24th August 1875.
The funeral took place on Tuesday afternoon. The cortege was met at the cemetery gates by the Rev. G. Bolderston. who conducted the service iu the chapel and at the graveside. The mourners were: First carriage— Mr. John Mason, Mr. Phil. Mason, Miss Edith Mason, Miss Plenty; second carriage— Miss B. Plenty. Mr. and Mrs. W. T. Hall, Mr. W. R. Ingram; third carriage—Mr. J. H. Mason, Miss Mason, Mr. D. Mason,
The coffin was of polished elm, with brass furniture, and inscribed:
ALICE EMILY MASON.
Died August 31. 1899,
Ages 50 years
A large number of friends gathered at the graveside and these are listed.
The arrangements were carried out by Mr. G. Wintle, undertaker.
