EDWIN STILWELL

THE LATE MR. STILWELL

The death occurred on Tuesday of Mr. Edwin Stilwell, landlord of the “Dolphin” Hotel, who has been in a delicate state of health for some months past.  Last autumn Mr. Stilwell was attacked with haemorrhage of the lungs, and his life was despaired of,  but he rallied in a marvellous manner, and was able to partly resume his ordinary business duties.  Still he was far from strong, and on Friday night he had another attack. Everything that medical skill and nursing could do was done, but he passed away on Tuesday night about half-past eleven.

Mr. Stilwell came to Newbury about eighteen years ago when he became landlord of the “White House”, London-road, where he gave special attention to angling guests and helped considerably to sustain the fortunes of the Newbury Angling Association.

Ten years ago he succeeded Mrs. Stacey in the tenancy of the “ Dolphin,” the reputation of which old hostelry has been successfully maintained. As a public caterer, with the help of his energetic wife, Mr. Stilwell gave great satisfaction. He was treasurer of the Newbury Licensed Victuallers’ Association and a member of the committee of the Working Men's Conservative Club and his death at the comparatively early age of 42, is greatly lamented by a large circle of friends and acquaintances.

He was a man of genial temperament and ready to take a share in any public work that came within his province. He leaves a widow and two daughters.

The funeral will take place on Saturday, the first part of the service at the Parish Church at 12 o’clock.

DEATH OF MR. STILWELL

The town has lost a respected inhabitant and public caterer by the death of Mr. Edwin Stilwell, which occurred on Tuesday night.
He was formerly in business at the "White House", London-road, favourite hostelry with anglers on the Kennet and Lambourn, but for some years he had kept the ’‘Dolphin” hotel in Bartholomew-street.
He had been in ill-health for a long time through lung trouble.
He was treasurer to the Newbury and District Licensed Victuallers’ Association, and a prominent member of the Working Mens’ Conservative Club.
Much sympathy has been expressed with the widow and her two daughters, and Mr. Stilwell’s death, at the comparatively early age of 42 year has occasioned much regret.
This obituary entry is awaiting verification.

*****

Newbury has lost a good friend by the death of Mr. E. Stilwell of the Dolphin Hotel, the club’s headquarters.  He was one of the strongest supporters of the club, and did everything in his power to further its interests.  In fact the Dolphin has become quite a byeword among football visitors, as expressing everything that can be wished for convenience and comfort.  I feel sure I am only voicing the members in expressing sincere sympathy with Mrs. Stiwell and family.

*****

MRS. STILWELL AND FAMILY desire to return their heartfelt THANKS to the many friends who have expressed their sympathy with them in their bereavement.
