THE LATE MR. GEORGE DAVIS After a protracted illness attended with much suffering, the deceased passed away on Thursday last, at his residence, Carnarvon-street. Mr. Davis came to Newbury nearly 40 years ago, and during the whole of that time until about six months ago has been in the employ of the firm of Messrs. Hopson and Sons as painter and grainer. Skilful in his calling, the deceased was scrupulously faithful in the discharge his duties. He was born in Bristol in 1827, and coming early in life under the influence of the Primitive Methodists he became a local preacher at the age of 19. He resided at various times in South Wales, Gloucestershire, Wiltshire, and subsequently to his removal to Newbury he became a Wesleyan Methodist, continuing to exercise his gifts as a local preacher. His funeral took place at the Cemetery on Saturday, and there were present Mr. Charles Davis, L.C.P. (son), Mr. F. C. Hopson (Mayor), Messrs. Pullen, Stoodley, Woodger, Garlick, Oliver, Brown. Lewendon, Brind, G. W. Love, Dell, J. W. Eggleton, D. Geater, Chippett, H. Hall, Randall, A. Ward, Dibley, Garlick, Hancock, Ferris, Buxcey, Cooper, Presto, Witts, Jas. Eggleton, and other employees of the firm. The Rev. F. Halliday officiated, and spoke of the long and strenuous services to the cause of his Lord and Master. It is interesting to note that around the grave stood three other aged Wesleyan local preachers, whose ages united with that of the deceased amounted to no less than 308 years.
The body was laid beside that of hie wife, who pre-deceased him nine years, and that of a daughter who 20 years before had been called home.
A married daughter is settled In the United States, and his son is master of the Council Schools. Camborne, and also engaged at the School of Mines.
