At some point in the 1860s young John Hamlin came to Newbury to work as a draper’s assistant, having served his apprenticeship with John Walker in Devizes. He was employed by Edward Hanington, who ran a shop at 19 Northbrook Street. When Hanington died in 1870 his wife, Mary, took on the business eventually handing over to her son, Harmon. All three Haningtons share a grave (W 151) in the Newtown Road Cemetery.

MARY HANINGTON

DEATH OF MRS HANINGTON

Very wide-spread sympathy has been extended to the Mayor of Newbury who has sustained a heavy bereavement during the past week, by the death of his aged mother, which took place on Saturday at her son's residence.

Mrs. Hanington had reached the patriarchal age of eighty, having survived her late husband, Mr. Edward Hanington, by nearly twenty five years.  She was a sister of the late Mr. H.S. Higgons, formerly a Mayor of the town, and during later years has lead a very retired life.

The funeral took place yesterday morning, and respect was shown throughout the town by closed shutters and drawn blinds. The knoll was tolled at the Parish Church, the flag was hoisted half-mast high at the Municipal buildings and also at the Fire Brigade Station.

The interment took place in the family grave at the Cemetery, the mourners being the Mayor (Mr. Councillor Hanington), Miss Higgons and Miss Drake (nieces). Several wreaths were sent by sympathising friends including a beautiful floral offering of respect from the Corporation.
