John Herbert (1820 – 1894)

                    

                                  

John was born 1820 in St Mary Bourne in Hampshire, the son of John & Sarah. He was baptised 29 August 1820 at St Peter in St Mary Bourne. He was recorded with his parents & siblings living in St Mary Bourne in the 1841 census.

John married Elizabeth Sheerman in Q4 1844 in Newbury district. Elizabeth was born circa 1822 in Donnington. In the 1851 census John & Elizabeth with three children, her mother & six servants were living at Lower Manor Farm in Ashmansworth. John was recorded as a farmer of 200 acres employing four labourers.

Elizabeth died June 1852 & was buried 29 June 1852 at St Peter in St Mary Bourne.

John then married Harriet Green in Q4 1859 in Kingsclere district. Harriet was baptized 7 December 1837 at St Martin in East Woodhay, the daughter of Thomas Green & Harriet Lamport.

In the 1861 census John & Harriet with six children from both John’s marriages were living in St Mary Bourne & John was recorded as a farmer of 50 acres employing one man.

By the 1871 census John & Harriet with five children were living in Slap Pond Road in Highclere & John was now recorded as a bricklayer’s labourer. John & Harriet with six children were still in Highclere in 1881 although now at Horris Hill with John still a bricklayer’s labourer.

In the 1891 census John & Harriet with son Fred were living at 3 Herborough Place off Bartholomew Street in Newbury & John was recorded as a labourer.

John died June 1894 and was buried 2 June 1894 at Newtown Road Cemetery.

In the 1901 & 1911 censuses Harriet was recorded at 15 Westbourne Terrace in Newbury. Her son Fred was living with her in 1901 & in 1911 her daughter Kate Baker & her family were also in the house.

Harriet died 28 January 1922 & was buried 1 February 1922 at Shaw Cemetery.
