JOSEPH ROLFE

Joseph Rolfe, 23, charged with having committed an assault, with intent, etc., on Jane Baker, at Greenham, on the 20th July.  The prisoner had been arraigned on the previous day, and pleaded not guilty, but Mr. Williams, who had been engaged on his behalf, stated that he wished to withdraw it and plead guilty to the minor charge of a common assault.  Mr. Carrington, who appeared for the prosecution, said that they were not desirous to press the superior charge, and the arrangement was accordingly assented to, the Court passing sentence of six months’ imprisonment, and to pay a fine of £5 before he was discharged.

The Bench, however, said he was responsible for his wife’s action, and fined him £2 10s., including costs, and his game license to be forfeited.
