GEORGE MAY SUDDEN DEATH AT THE WORKHOUSE
On Wednesday in last week an old man named George May, 73 years of age, formerly ostler at the "Dolphin" presented himself at the Workhouse, said he had a bad cold and wanted a day's rest. He was accordingly admitted, supplied with beef tea and other nourishment — solid food he would not take- and on the following day he said he was much better, and should leave on Saturday. About two o'clock on Friday morning the nurse was called up by one of the inmates of the ward, who thought he could not hear deceased breathing. An examination proved that life was extinct, and that deceased had been dead perhaps about an hour. Mr. Birch, the medical attendant at the Union, subsequently saw the body, and he gave it as his opinion that death was from syncope. These facts having been deposed to at and inquest held on Friday by Dr. Watson, J.P., a verdict to that effect was returned by the jury, of whom Mr. F. Chivers was foreman.
