AWFULLY SUDDEN DEATH IN THE STREET
Considerable consternation was caused in the town on Thursday mid-day by the sudden death of an elderly man on Newbury Bridge. He appeared to be seized suddenly with a fit, and turning fell on the kerb, striking his head and inflicting a severe wound. Sergeant Borlase was immediately on the spot, and proceeded to Dr Ryott’s surgery for medical aid. Meanwhile several of the bystanders did what was possible to relieve the poor man, but he died just before the arrival of Mr. Toms, dental surgeon, and Mr. Paget, assistant at Dr Ryott’s.

The body was immediately taken on a stretcher to the mortuary. As Morris had been attended by Dr. Wyllie, who was able to certify the cause of death, an inquest was not considered necessary.

In the early part of his life Morris was in the Reading Borough Police Force, but for many years kept the “Bull and Dog”, public house in the city. Since leaving there he has followed the business of a market gardener a was specially known as a rose grower.
