DEATH OF MR. J.B. WEBB

Member of Old Newbury Family We regret to record the death of Mr. John Brooks Webb, a member of a very old Newbury family, which took place at his home, 75, Bartholomew-street ovne Sunday, at the age of 77 years. He was born in.Newbury, and but for a brief'spell when he was a young man he went away to. gain business experience, all his life was spent in the town. For some considerable time he had not been in good health and as latterly had been confined indoors, but he was only taken seriously ill three days before his death. Mr. Webb was the eldest son of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Webb, and for some years after the death of their father he and his brother, the late Mr. Sam Webb, carried on the well-known grocery business of Messrs. Webb and Sons, the Broadway, which was founded by their great-grandfather, and which had been in the hands of the Webb family for over a century. Something like 15 years ago it was acquired by the present proprietor, Mr. G.A. Sage, and Mr. Samuel Webb continued to retain connection with the firm until his death on March 31st, 1931. The deceased leaves a widow and two sons.


The funeral took place quietly yesterday (Wednesday) morning, the Rev. J. Riach, Methodist minister, conducting a short service at the house, and also officiating at the graveside in the Newtown-road Cemetery.
The family mourners were Mr. Hedley Webb (son), Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Webb (son and daughter-in-law), Messrs Tom and Frank Webb (brothers), Misses E.E. And E.B. Webb (sisters), the Rev. Wimboult Harding (brother-in-law). Others present at the Cemetery were the Rev. 0. Kirkby Evans, Councillor G.G. Green, Mr. John Bradfield, Mr. J. Baverstock, Mr. W.J. Poulton, Mrs. Harry Dolton, Miss Edith Dolton,Miss Rose Lomas, Mrs. A.H.. Butler, Miss Fanny Mason, Mrs. Gould, Miss Gould, Mrs. P.H. Sellwood, Mrs. North, Mrs. Kingstone, Mrs. R.E. Moore, Mrs. Sam Smith, Mrs. Hudson, Miss Willoughby, Miss Piper and Mrs. Bannister. The only wreaths were from: "Mother", Bernard and Olive, Hedle Barbara and Robin: His sisters and brothers. Bi , essie, Nell Nellie, Tom y and Frank: "Tasmania! Poole.
