Mary Salter (1796 – 1874)
John Salter was born circa 1797 in Newbury and baptized on 15 April 1798 at St Nicolas in Newbury. His parents were John Salter and Elizabeth Hunt who had married on 2 December 1792 at St Nicolas.
He married Mary Dance on 10 February 1823 at St Mary in Thatcham. He was recorded as resident in Greenham at the time of the marriage. Mary was born circa 1797 and her birth place recorded in the later census returns was Thatcham.
John and Mary had at least six children all born in Newbury or Greenham including Sarah (1824), William (1826), Mary Ann (1828), John (1831), Frederick (1837) & George (1839). Mary Ann died aged 7 and was buried in St Nicolas in Newbury on 10 February 1836.
In the 1841 census John and Mary along with children Sarah, William, John, Frederick and George were living in Cheap Street in Newbury with John recorded as an agricultural labourer.
Ten years later in the 1851 census John and Mary along with sons William, Frederick and George were living in Factory Yard off Cheap Street in Newbury with John recorded as an agricultural labourer, William an ostler and Frederick and George both errand boys.
John and Mary along with son William were still living in a Yard off Cheap Street in Newbury in the 1861 census with John and William both recorded as bricklayer’s labourers.
John died on 27 November 1867 and was buried on 2 December at Newtown Road Cemetery.
Mary was recorded as living by herself at 8 Bradleys Yard off Cheap Street in the 1871 census and her occupation was char woman.
Mary died on 29 October 1874 and was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 31 October. An announcement appeared in the Newbury Weekly News dated 5 November 1874 as below.
SALTER – Oct.29, at Bradley’s Yard, Newbury, Mary Salter, aged 78.
John and Mary’s sons William and Frederick were buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 26 May 1876 and 21 March 1907 respectively. Frederick’s two wives and six of his children were also buried at Newtown Road Cemetery.
