THE LATE MRS. JOHN BELL

INTERMENT AT NEWTOWN ROAD CEMETERY

The funeral of the late Mrs. John McNay Bell, of 31, Cheap-street, whose death occurred on Tuesday in last week, took place at the Old Cemetery, Newtown-road, Newbury, on Friday afternoon. Mrs. Bell had been a member of the Congregational Church since 1880 and many members of the church were present at the service. The Rev. E. H. Titchmarsh was the officiating minister. The mourners were: Mr. J. M. Bell (husband), Miss A. M. Bell, Miss M. Bell and Miss G. Bell (daughters), Mr. and Mrs. W. Lloyd (son-in-law and daughter), Mr. and Mrs. Bert Bell (son and daughter-in-law), Mr. Fritz Bell (nephew).

The Congregational Minister, the Rev. John Wilding, was unable to attend, as he was confined to his bed with a cold. “There then follows a list of the many people who attended the funeral”.

Wreaths were sent from: Sorrowing husband and children, Ann, Maggie and Grace; Nell and Will and her grandchildren , Marjorie and Barbara; Bert, Fanny and John; Gertie (Hove); John and Vera (Exeter); Ruby and Fritz; Millie and Blanche; Mr. W. H. Gore; “there then follows a list of the many people who sent flowers”.

The funeral arrangements were carried out by Messrs. Camp Hopson and Co. Ltd., Northbrook-street, Newbury.

She died on 21 November 1933 aged 81 and buried on 24 November 1933.

Also John McNay Bell, husband of the above, who died on 17 October 1934 aged 81 and buried on 22 October 1934.

Dear Mr Bell

It was indeed good of you in the midst of your great grief to take the trouble of writing to us.  But I think you know how very fond we have always been of Mrs Bell.  I well remember from the time of my first coming to Newbury, how much good it did me to come and see her.  The effect of being with her was always so heartening.  If I were a bit down or bothered or discouraged she was just the one I loved to go and see.  She had such a deep fount of faith and kindness and understanding.  There was such a strength and restfulness about her that did one a world of good.  The trials and illnesses through which she passed could not shake it, only made you feel still more the wonder and the glory of it, and no-one could mistake the source from which she drew it.  I do feel what a blessing it has been to know and to love her, and I have received from her some of those best human things which nothing can take away.

For all that I write I include Mrs Fowler.  We shall be thinking of you all tomorrow, and they’ll be the kind of thoughts that turn to prayers.  At such times one does feel a great gratitude to God, and how much richer and dearer the life of heaven has become.

DEATH of MRS JOHN BELL

HER MANY FRIENDS IN Newbury will regret to learn of the death of Mrs. Bell, wife of Mr. John McNay Bell, of 31 Cheap Street, which occurred on Tuesday.  Mrs Bell, who was 81 years of age, never took a prominent part in the public life of the town, but her genial personality and kindness could always be relied upon, and she was ever ready to help a good cause.  She was a member of the Congregational Church, which she joined in 1880.

Mrs Bell was not a native of Newbury.  She came here from Reading between fifty and sixty years ago to the drapery establishment of the late Mr Bundock, who then carried on business at Speenhamland. Mr and Mrs Bell celebrated their golden wedding two years ago last July.  The funeral will take place at the Old Cemetery, Newtown Road, at two o’clock on Friday afternoon.
