Jessie Blanche Goddard (1879 – 1933)
Jessie Blanche Phillips was the adopted daughter of Henry and Harriett, nee Wasley, Phillips. She was born circa 1879 in Hayden Hill near Cheltenham, according to details recorded in the 1911 census. There are no official records of her adoption so her parents are not known.
In the 1881 census Jessie was recorded with her adopted parents Henry and Harriett living in Boddington in Gloucestershire Henry was a market gardener. Ten years later in the 1891 census Jessie with Henry and Harriett were living in the London Rowing Club in Putney, Henry was a steward and Harriett a stewardess.
Jessie married a widower Ernest William Goddard on 23 February 1901 at St Michael and All Angel in Enborne.
In the 1901 census taken just weeks after the marriage Jessie and Ernest were living in Andover Road in Newbury, Ernest was a manager to a timber merchant. Ten years later in the 1911 census Jessie and Ernest along with son Leslie Ernest aged 5 were living in East Malling in Kent and Ernest was an insurance agent.
By the time of the 1921 census Jesse and Ernest were living at 4 Southampton Terrace, Newtown Road in Newbury with Jessie’s adopted parents. Ernest was a bar manager at Jack Hotel Tap in Newbury.
Ernest died on 2 December 1924 aged 57 while living in Chesterfield Road and he was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 6 December.
Jessie died on 16 October 1933 aged 54 while living in Greenham Road and she was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 19 October.
