George was baptised on the 3rd January 1813 in Ludgershall, Wiltshire, the son of Joseph (an Innholder) and Hannah Purdue (nee Parsons) who were married on the 20th October 1793 at St Nicolas Church, Newbury.

George’s father Joseph was born c1762. He died in 1844 (age at death recorded as 82), and was buried on the 30th April at St Nicolas Newbury.

His mother Hannah was born c1765 in Greenham, Berkshire

Joseph and Hannah also had the following children:

Joseph born 1st August February 1794, baptised 22nd August 1794 at St Nicolas Newbury

Mary born 12th March 1798, baptised 6th April 1798 at St Nicolas Newbury

Hannah born 22nd April 1800, baptised 18th May 1800 at St Nicolas Newbury

Sarah born 10th June 1803, baptised 16th June 1803 at St Nicolas Newbury

William born 2nd June 1805, baptised 30th June 1805 at St Nicolas Newbury

Maria baptised on the 4th October 1807 in Ludgershall, Wiltshire

Bride: Caroline Lovegrove, full age, spinster, abode, Collingbourne Ducis

Fathers: Joseph Purdue, a Farmer and John Lovegrove, a Carpenter

(Caroline Lovegrove was born in Newbury, Berkshire, she was baptised on the 4th September 1814 at St Nicolas Church, Newbury, the daughter of John and Maria Lovegrove (nee Whiting) of Bartholomew Street, Newbury, who were married at St Nicolas Church Newbury on the 13th August 1811).

 

George and Caroline had the following children baptised at St Nicolas Church Newbury: (George recorded as a Licensed Victuller on all the baptism records)


George Edwin, born 30th March 1844, baptised 31st March 1844

Twins:  Fred and Henry, born 15th December 1847. Fred was baptised 17th December 1847 (died aged 3 days) and Henry was baptised 18th December 1847.

John, born 8th September 1849, baptised 28th October 1849

The 1841 census records George (25) as a Mealman, living in Bartholomew Street, Newbury, with Caroline (25)

In 1851 George (37) was recorded as a Publican** living in Bartholomew Street, with Caroline (36), their sons, George (7), Henry (3), John (1) and three servants. (** Bricklayer’s Arms)

Their son Henry died aged 7 on the 20th January 1855, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 24th January.

Caroline died aged 43 on the 6th October 1857. She was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 10th October (funeral service held at St Nicolas Church, Newbury)

George remarried in 1858.

Bride: Mary Ann Holley, spinster, full age, abode, East Woodhay, Hampshire

Fathers: Joseph Purdue, a Farmer and George Hunt Holley, a Tallow Chandler

Witnesses: George Edward Stillman and Mary Elizabeth Stillman

(Mary Ann Holley was baptised on the 15th November 1816, at St Nicolas Church, Newbury, the daughter of the George Hunt and Elizabeth Holley (nee Fletcher) who were married on the 1st February 1812 in Alverstoke, Hampshire)

The 1861 census records George (49) as a Publican, living in Bartholomew Street, with Mary Ann (40), his sons George (17), a Gunmaker’s Apprentice, John (12), Mary Ann’s nephew George Holly (17), a Sailor and a servant.

George died on the 23rd June 1866. He was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 26th June (funeral service held at St Nicolas Church, Newbury) (age at death recorded as 54 on GRO)
