Daniel and Ann had a daughter Matilda who was born on 11 November 1835. She was baptized on 13 December 1835 at West Shefford Primitive Methodist Chapel and Daniel was recorded as a baker. Another daughter Dorcas was born in 1838 in Newbury. Twins Rebecca and Thomas were born in 1840 and died as infants in the same year.

In the 1841 census Daniel and Ann were living in Speen with daughters Matilda and Dorcas.

Ten years later in the 1851 census Daniel and Ann were recorded at the Wheat Sheaf Inn in Speen with daughters Matilda and Dorcas. Daniel was a publican and grocer, Matilda a dressmaker and Dorcas a scholar. Daniel and family lived in the Wheatsheaf Inn for a number of years as the Inn was put up for sale in August 1846 and March 1854 and on both occasions Daniel was named as the occupier and a yearly tenant.

In the 1861 census Daniel and Ann were living at The Crescent Inn in Speen with daughter Dorcas and Ann King aged two, a niece. Daniel was a retired grocer and Dorcas a milliner.

A few days after the funeral on 24 December at 33 Shaw Crescent there was a sale of Daniel’s household furniture and goods. Daniel left a will and probate was granted on 8 January 1881 at Oxford to Elijah Bew of Eastbury, a farmer and one of the executors. The value of the estate was under £400.

Later in the year on 20 September 1881 at Black Boys Hotel in Newbury an auction was held on instructions from the executors of Daniel’s estate. The first lot was 1 & 2 St John’s Villas, Newtown Road which were occupied for rents of £18 and £24 a year respectively. The second lot was six freehold houses in Prospect Place, off St John’s Road, producing an annual rent of £55 18s.
