| Transciption: | LUCY ELIZA TAYLOR Funeral of Mrs L E Taylor SERVICE AT ST JOHN’S CHURCH NEWBURY The death occurred on Thursday,July 20th, of Mrs Lucy Ellis Taylor, of 5 Livingstone road, Newbury, after a long and painful illness. The funeral took place on Monday, the first part of the service being held in St John’s Church, conducted by Father W B Cameron. The interment was at the Newtown road Cemetery. The mourners were: Mr C Brindley, Mrs F Hill, Mr S Brindley, Mrs F Higgins, Mr F Brindley, Miss N Taylor, Mr R Taylor (sons and daughters); Mrs T Dodd, Mrs C Brooks (sisters); Mr G Smith, Mr J Smith (brothers); Mrs C Brindley, Mrs S Brindley, Mrs F Taylor (daughters in-law); Mr F Hill; Nr F Higgins sos-in-law); Miss E Brindley, Miss D Hill (granddaughters); Mrs H Smith (sister-in-law); Ethel ad Florrie (nieces); Mr F Pomroy, Mr A Ilsley, Miss D Crame. There were many beautiful wreaths. A Cross the length of the coffin was sent from Mrs Taylor’s children. Others were from Sister Nell; Sister Jane; George, Jack and Sue; Laura (Andover); Fred, Joan and Cecil; Frank, Doris and Billie; Three granddaughters (Burghclere); Mr and Mrs Smithers (Burghclere); Mr Hart (Burghclere); Ron, Jack, Harold and Douglas; Bill; Jimmy; Mrs Pomroy and Frank; Arthur and Mrs Ilsley (Reading; Grace (Reading); Annie and Fred and all at Fawley; Sis, Kath, Jack, Rich and Arthur; Sis; Phyllis (Bucklebury); Mr and Mrs Adams; Daisy; Ethel and Florrie; Mr and Mrs Hieatt; Joan and John Hieatt; Brenda Hieatt; Mr and Mrs G Stephens; Rosa, Ella and Rene Hill; Alex and Nellie and Mr Mayhew; Mr and Mrs Long; Mr and Mrs Williams (Aldern Bridge); ; staff 88 Northbrook street; Mr and Mrs Crame and family (Hungerford); Mr and Mrs Mason (Stockcross); Mrs Dubock; Miss L M Else; Auntie Bessie and Ronnie. 1860-1933
Lucy Eliza Smith was born in Buttermere or Vernham Hampshire the daughter of George and Ann Smith (nee Lancely).
Lucy’s father:
Lucy’s father George was a Shepherd. He was born c1814 in Enborne Berkshire. He married Sarah Ebern (Eborn) (born c1823 in East Woodhay Hampshire) on the 16th October 1841 at St Mary Kintbury, they had at least three children, William born 1843 in West Woodhay, Caroline born c1846 in West Woodhay and Elizabeth born 1847 in East Woodhay.
In 1851 George (36), Sarah (30), William (7), Caroline (5) and Elizabeth (3) were living in East Woodhay.
Sarah died aged 29 (death recorded in Kingsclere, March quarter 1852). George married Lucy’s mother later the same year (marriage registered in Andover, December quarter).
Lucy’s mother:
Ann was born c1826 in Tangley Hampshire the daughter of Thomas and Maria Lancely (nee Miller) who were married on the 27th December 1820 in Vernham Dean Hampshire.

In 1861 the family were living in Hornes Farm Vernham Dean Hampshire. By 1865 they had moved to Newbury.
The 1871 census records George (55), Ann (45), George (16), Ann (14), John (12), Lucy (10), Charles (9), James (7), Jane (5), Ellen (4) and Herbert (2), living in Hazell’s Yard Newbury.
In 1881 Lucy (20) was working as a General Servant, living at home (6 Ashton Court Newbury) with her parents George (67), and Ann (55), her sister Ellen (14), a General Servant and her brothers James (17), a General Labourer and Herbert (12).
By 1891 all the children had left home and George (78) and Ann (66) were living in Bartholomew’s Almshouses Newbury.
Ann died aged 68 in 1894 she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 30th March
George continued to live at 5 St Bartholomew’s Almshouses until his death in 1904 he died aged 94 and was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 19th February.
Lucy:
Lucy married Alfred Brindley in 1881 in Newbury. (Alfred was born c1854 in Newbury, the son of Charles and Ann Brindley (nee Plumb)who were married in Newbury in 1844 (surname recorded as Brinsley))
Alfred and Lucy had the following children:

Charlotte 1890
Alfred c1893
The 1891 census records Alfred (37), as a Coachman living in Greenham with Lucy (28), Charles (8), Samuel (2) and Charlotte (4 months).
Alfred died aged 40 on the 3rd February 1895 he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 8th February.
Lucy remarried in 1897 in Newbury. Her 2nd husband was Francis William Taylor (born c1875 in Ecchinswell Hampshire the son of Edward James and Sarah Ann Taylor (nee King) who married in Hampshire in 1872).
Francis and Lucy had the following children:
Frances Maud 1898
Annie 1899 (died aged 17 months in 1901, laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 13th April, recorded as Anne in burial records)
Nora Ann 1901
Edward Alfred 1904
In 1901 Lucy (36), was recorded living at 9 Adey’s Buildings with her children, Samuel (13), Charlotte (10), Alfred (8) and Maud (3) (Frances Maud). Annie (1) was recorded as a Patient in the Newbury District Hospital.
The 1911 census records Francis (36) as a General Labourer, living at 9 Adey’s Bulidings York Road Newbury with Lucy (48) and his children, Frances Maud (12), Nora Ann (9), Edward Alfred (6), his step-daughter, Charlotte Brindley (20), a Laundry Machinist and a boarder, William Bristow (69, a House Painter.
Francis died aged 38 on the 15th June 1913 he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the18th June
Lucy died aged 72 on the 20th July 1933 she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the24th July with both of her husbands.
