Alfred Giles
Alfred Giles
1810-1865
Alfred was born on the 24th July 1810 in Newbury he was baptised on the 25th February 1811 at St Nicolas Church Newbury the son of John and Lucy Giles.
In 1815 Alfred (4) was living in Jack of Newbury Yard (east side of Northbrook Street) Newbury with Lucy Giles (35), Richard Giles (13), Eliza Giles (9), Harriet Giles (7), James Giles (2), a female infant Giles, Deborah Snow (60) and Sarah Snow (22).
His mother Lucy died aged 36 in 1816 she was buried on the 20th November at St Nicolas Newbury.
On the 5th January 1842 Alfred found himself before the Newbury Borough Sessions on an assault charge, the following was reported in the Berkshire Chronicle on the 8th January 1842
Alfred Giles and George Pithouse were convicted for violently assaulting on the 27th December 1841, James Collins, and sentenced each of them to one month hard labour, and to enter into their own recognizances of 20 shillings each, and find two sureties of 10 shillings each, and to be imprisoned till such security was found.
Alfred was a Bricklayer he married Ann Maria Giles on the 9th August 1846 at St Nicolas Church Newbury, both were single and from Newbury. Alfred’s father John and Ann Maria’s father William were both recorded as Labourers on the marriage record.
(Ann Maria (aka Maria) was the daughter of William and Mary Giles who were married on the 14th September 1811 at St Nicolas Church Newbury Mary Jones was a widow (maiden name unknown). In 1815 Maria (an infant) was living in Kimbers Yard Northcroft Lane (west side of Northbrook Street) Newbury with William Giles (48), Mary Giles (36), Ambrose Giles (3) and Elizabeth Jones (8)).
Ann Maria had at least two children before she married Alfred, Clarissa was born c1835 and Samuel was born c1837. In 1841 Maria (20) was working as a Dressmaker and was living in the City Newbury with Clarissa (6) and Samuel (4).
In 1851 Alfred (40), Ann (38), a Midwife, Clarissa (15), an Ann Phillips (34) and her 1 month old son Baby Phillips were recorded living in Lewis’s Building, Bartholomew Street Newbury.
The 1861 census records Alfred (51) and Ann (49) living in the City Newbury.
Alfred died aged 56 in 1865 he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 5th July
Ann Maria remarried in 1869 her 2nd husband was William Tranter. William died in 1877 and Ann Maria remarried the following year, her 3rd husband was John Mills.
