Sarah Ann Curtis
c1849-1933
Sarah was born c1849 in Newbury Berkshire the daughter of William Henry and Hannah Samuels (nee Purdue)
Sarah’s father William was a Tailor. He was born c1804 in Newbury the son of William and Mary Samuels (nee Challis). He married Mary Purdue on the 20th April 1829 in Thatcham and they had 2 children. William Henry born 1831 (died 1835) and Charlotte born 1834. Mary died two years later, she was buried on the 20th September 1836 at St Nicolas Newbury. William married Sarah’s mother on the 11th December 1837.
Sarah’s mother Hannah was born c1803 in Newbury the daughter of Joseph and Charlotte Purdue (nee Clafford) who were married on the 27th December 1785 at St Nicolas Church Newbury
In 1851 Sarah Ann (2), was living in Garland’s Buildings Newbury with her parents William (43) and Hannah (46) and her siblings Caroline (12), Charles (10), Thomas (7) and William (6).
The 1861 census records Sarah Ann (12) living in Mayor’s Lane, Cheap Street Newbury with her parents and brothers, Thomas (18) and William (17).
Sarah married Thomas Curtis in 1870 (marriage registered in Newbury). (Thomas was a Carman, he was born in 1842 in Caversham Oxfordshire the son of James and Sarah Curtis (nee Seymour)who were married in Caversham in 1830.
Thomas and Sarah has the following children (all born in Newbury):

In 1871 Thomas, Sarah and their 9 month old daughter Sarah Ann were living at 4 Garland Yard Newbury
The 1881 census records the family living at 4 Prince’s Place Newbury
In 1891 Thomas, Sarah and their children Louisa (18), Emily (13) Albert (6) and Arthur (4) were living at 3 Prince’s Place Newbury.
Thomas died aged 54 in 1897 he was buried on the 17th December at St Mary Greenham.
The 1901 census records Sarah living at 12 Smith’s Buildings Greenham with her children, Charles (18), Albert (15), Arthur (13), Kate (9) and Fred (6).
The 1911 census records Sarah as a Charwoman still living at 12 Smith’s Buildings with her children, Albert (25) a Railway Platelayer, Arthur (23) a Domestic Gardener and Fred Ernest (17) a House Painter.
Sarah died aged 84 in 1933 she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 26th May.
