FUNERAL OF MR. E.J. BROWN

 

Territorials Act as Bearers

 

The funeral of Mr. Ernest John Brown, aged 67, of 20 Jubilee-road, Newbury, who died in Newbury Hospital as the result of an accident, took place on Thursday afternoon at the Old Cemetery, Newtown-road.

 

Mr. Brown had been employed by the Great Western Railway for many years as a carman, and it was while he was temporarily in their service a few days before Christmas he that met with his death. He was a veteran of the Royal Berkshire Regiment, having served in the Egyptian campaign at the Battle of Tofrek, where the regiment gained the title of “Royal.” As the oldest member of the Regiment present at the re-union dinner recently, he was toasted and accorded musical honours. Mr. Brown was also an old member of the Ancient Order of Foresters.

The service was taken by the Rector of Newbury, the Rev. W. L. Cooper, six members of the Territorials acting as bearers. They were C.S.M. H. Sharpe, C.S.M. Burningham, Sergt. Codling, Sergt. Kingh [sic], Pte. Hayward.

 

The family mourners were: Mrs. Brown (widow), Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Pocock, Mr. Baldwin.

The British Legion were there with their standard, borne by Mr. Tom Morris, whilst Capt. A.V. Bradshaw, M.C., himself an old Royal Berkshire, read the Legion Exhortation. The “Last Post” and “Reveille” were sounded by Drummer Ferris.

 

Amongst others present were Captain I. R. Baird, M.C. (representing the Royal Berks Regiment), Mr. J.G. J. Codling, Mr. S.E. Scott, Mr. T. Franklin (late stationmaster), Mr. H. Townsend, and the following members of the Foresters; Chief Ranger H. Pearce, G. Chivers, P.C.R., H. Povey, G. Stratton, P.C.R., W.H. Knapp, G. Lawrence, A. Barker and W. Pearce. Representatives of the G.W.R., were: Messrs. H. Cambridge, Inspector Perry, G. Holden, W. Deacon, G. Morris, H. White, G. Dawson, A. Raymond, W. Goodman, W. Guy and G. Smith.

 

Wreaths were sent by Widow; Fred and Alice; Sarah, Eunice, Frank and Ernie; Mr. and Mrs. G. Miles; Mr. and Mrs. Pocock (Greenham Common); Mrs. Baker and Mrs. Humphries; Mr. and Mrs. Guy, junr.; Old Comrades of “A” Company; All ranks of the Royal Berks., Regiment; Members of the 4th Royal Berks. Territorials Club; All Grades, Newbury Goods Station; Newbury Passenger Station, Staff.

 

The funeral arrangements were carried out by A.J. Chivers, Newbury.
