Mary Oldham

c1786-1862

Mary was born in London. She was baptised on the 7^th September 1786 at St Giles Camberwell and was the daughter of Samuel and Mary Mortimer (nee Woolley) who married on the 6^th October 1785 St Alphege Greenwich.

By 1795 the family were living in Newbury.

Mary’s siblings were (all born in Newbury and baptised at the Lower Meeting House Independent):

Mary’s father Samuel died aged 47 on the 7^th February 1808 he was buried on the 13^th February at the Lower Meeting House (Independent) Newbury

The 1815 census of Newbury records Mary (29) living at a School in The Marsh (east side of Northbrook Street) Newbury. Others recorded at the school were Mary Mortimer (no age given, recorded directly above Mary, possibly Mary’s mother) followed by two female servants and a list of boarders, 4 boys ranging from 5-7 years old and 17 girls ranging from 6-15 years old.

Mary married John Oldham (a widower) on the 7^th October 1823 at St Mary’s Henley on Thames Oxfordshire. (John’s 1^st wife Martha died aged 30 she was buried on the 29^th April 1823 at Wallingford Market Independent Chapel) John was born c1791 in Melton Suffolk he had a son John born c1817 in Wallingford.

In both the 1841 and 1851 census records the family were recorded living in Fish Street Wallingford and both John and his son were recorded as Woollen Drapers and Tailors.

Mary’s husband John died aged 65 in 1856 in Wallingford. After his death Mary moved to the Newbury area. In the 1861 census she was recorded as a boarder in the household of a Joseph and Mary Shaw in Cold Ash.

Mary died aged 76 on the 10^th October 1862 she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 14^th October alongside her brother Philip Mortimer and his wife Harriet.
