Joseph Wright

Joseph White

c1787-1862

 

Joseph was born in Newbury the son of Joseph and Sarah White (nee Brown) who were married on the 26th February 1775 at St Nicolas Church Newbury. 

The 1815 census of Newbury records Joseph (27) living in King John’s Almshouses with his parents Joseph (64) and Sarah (61) and his brother George (16). (No occupations were recorded for any of them. Joseph Senior was recorded as being blind)

Joseph’s father died aged 79 he was laid to rest on the 6th June 1829 at St Nicolas Newbury

His mother died aged 77 she was laid to rest on the 13th January 1830 at St Nicolas newbury

Joseph was recorded as a Beer Retailer in Bartholomew Street Newbury UK City and County Directories 1600s-1900s in various years ranging from 1830-1852.

He married Elizabeth Quarterman on the 2nd September 1837 in Enborne Berkshire.

Elizabeth gave birth to a daughter the following year (birth registered in the September Q 1838) and a son Joseph Charles in 1840 (birth registered in the September Q). She died aged 38 not long after giving birth to Joseph Charles and was buried on the 17th November 1840 at St Nicolas Newbury.

The 1841 census records Joseph (50) as a Cabinet Maker, living alone in Bartholomew Street Newbury. His 9 month old son Joseph Charles  was recorded in this census living in Fidler’s Yard Newbury with a Robert Withers (20),  recorded as a Brewer’s Labourer, Eliza Withers (20) and their son Charles (I year 9 months).

Witnesses: George Stillman and Joseph Shepherd

(Ann Phillips was born in Berry Head Devon she was baptised (as Nancy) on the 8th October 1797 in Brixham Torbay,  the daughter of John and Sarah Phillips. She married Joseph Arms on the 14th February 1820 (as Nancy Phillips). Joseph Arms died aged 47 in 1840, he was buried on the 2nd September at St Nicolas Newbury) 

In the 1851 census Joseph (63) was recorded as a Beer Shop Keeper living with Ann (53) and Joseph Charles (10) in Bartholomew Street.

They were still living in Bartholomew Street when the 1861 census was recorded, Joseph (73) was recorded as a Publican and Cabinet Maker and Joseph Charles (20) was recorded as a Labourer.

Joseph died aged 75 on the 24th April 1862 he was buried in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 29th April.

The 1871 census records Ann (71) as a Housekeeper living at 52 Bartholomew Street she died aged 80 in 1879 and was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 23rd July.

White Joseph Effects: under £200          The Will of Joseph White late of Newbury in the County of Berks deceased who died 24th April 1862 at Newbury aforesaid was proved at the Principal Registry by the oath of Ann White of Newbury
