Mary Gerrish was born in Wiltshire, she married William Ashley (surname recorded as Ashly) on the22nd December 1799 in Wilton Wiltshire and they had the following children:

Thomas born 1/1/1807 and Jabez born 18/3/1809 both baptised on the 24/12/1809 at Crow Lane (Indepentent) Wilton Wiltshire (father‘s occupation: Weaver)

Mary born 7/2/1816 and Harriott born 10/6/1818 baptised 9/7/1818 by the Wesleyan Methodist Minister in Southampton Hampshire (father’s occupation: Weaver)                                                                                                                                                         

Sophia 2/9/1820 baptised by the Wesleyan Methodist Ministers in Andover Hampshire   (father’s occupation: Weaver)

In 1841 Mary was living in Bartholomew Street with her husband William, a Tea Dealer and her children, Sarah aged 14 and William aged 12.  In 1851 she was recorded living in Trafalgar Place Newbury with her husband William who was recorded as a Journeyman Minister,  also recorded in the same household were her married daughter Sarah Clements (24)son-in-law George Clements (24 ) and her granddaughters  Ellen (3) Emily (2)

Mary’s husband died aged 79 in 1861. After his death Mary continued to live in Trafalgar Place with her daughter Sarah Clements and her family, the 1861 census recorded her as a Dissenting Preacher’s Widow.

Mary died aged 83 in 1862 she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 3rd March.
